Who is eligible to receive financial assistance from Guiding Hand Foundation?

  • Must have a cancer diagnosis.

  • Must be in active treatment (chemotherapy, radiation, bone marrow transplant, hospice, palliative care or surgery with a recovery time in excess of four weeks.) Hormone therapy is not considered active treatment.

  • Must be living in the six-county Sioux Empire Region area of South Dakota (Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, Moody & Turner Counties counties).

  • Patient may only receive financial assistance once in a 12 month period.

  • Anyone can “Nominate”: Yourself, family member, friend, social worker or clinician healthcare professional.

  • Grant money is paid directly to services or vendors. Sorry, NO grant money is given directly to those who qualify.

How can a patient use the financial assistance he/she "receives"?

  • Rent or mortgage payment

  • Home phone or cell phone bill

  • Gas, electric, or water bill

  • Garbage bill

  • Gasoline purchases using Holiday fuel cards

  • Cable/Internet bills

  • Car Payments/Insurance

  • Childcare fees

What CANNOT be paid for using the financial assistance a patient receives?

  • General Patient Use/Spending

  • Medical expenses, bills & co-pays

  • Dental expenses

  • Credit card payments

  • Insurance fees

How does someone apply for assistance?

  1. Print & Complete the Nomination Form (Click here to download PDF file)

  2. The entire completed application is then sent to The Guiding Hand Foundation via mail or email. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

  3. Review of the completed application by The Guiding Hand Foundation will occur the following month.
  4. One person will be selected each month, at random draw, each month. Remaining applications will be added into the drawing for the quarterly give.

  5. Staff, friends, family and other individuals will be contacted and notified of a "Give Celebration" that staff and sponsors can also attend where the patient will be notified that they were selected. If a "Give Celebration" can not take place, board members will gather to present the news to the person at a matter that is fit for them: phone or in person.

  6. Checks are made payable and sent directly to the vendor(s).

Can a patient apply again after the initial financial assistance is received?

Patients may apply again in 12 months if they are still in active treatment.

What if a patient dies during the application process or hadn’t used up their entire amount of financial assistance?

As long as the application is approved and funds were granted, prior to the date of death, the patient’s immediate family members have the "rights" to the remaining financial assistance dollar amount, keeping with the same policies and terms.

Where does Guiding Hand Foundation’s funding come from?

The Guiding Hand Foundation is fortunate to receive funding from a variety of sources including individuals, businesses, foundations, special events and community fundraisers.

How much of my donation will go to program support?

The Guiding Hand Foundation is 100% fully volunteer, meaning that 97%-98% of our revenue is re-invested back into programming for individuals and families affected by cancer. The other two to three percent is geared for our organizational needs such as marketing, advertising, website, and more.

Can I designate my gift to support a specific program?

If you would like your gift to support a specific program, event or family, please note that in the memo line of your check or contact our office.

What volunteer opportunities are available at The Guiding Hand Foundation?

The Guiding Hand Foundation has excellent volunteering opportunities. Volunteering in our community is a great way to give back and to meet new people. GHF is always looking for volunteers to help us pick up items, event set up and take down days or serve on one of various boards. Below are different committees and programs in which you can volunteer for GHF.


It is the desire and the intention of GHF to conduct its affairs in conformity and harmony with the strategic plans, policies, procedures and bylaws of GHF. I want to be a volunteer, please tell more about some of your areas?

Event Volunteer- We would like to thank the many people who join our team at various times of the year to volunteer at our annual and 3rd party events. Being a GHF event volunteer is a great way to get involved with your community, meet new people and give back to a great cause. Help GHF by volunteering throughout the year at various events that suit you best.


Executive Board of Directors- The GHF Board of Directors is the governing authority of the organization and is responsible for directing, influencing and monitoring the organization's business. The role of the GHF's Board of Directors is to oversee the legal and ethical provision of activities within the organization such as revenue generation including fundraising and the delivery of service. The Board of Directors meets approximately 8-11 times a year during a one - three year term.


Action Committee- The GHF Action Committee (A/C) is the heart of GHF. This committee meets approximately every six weeks throughout the year to discuss and plan upcoming events for GHF. As a volunteer they come out to as many events as they can to help organize and execute the event.


Finance Advisory Committee- The Finance Committee is in charge of with helping the staff create an annual operating budget, and help ensure a balanced budget. The committee suggests ways to reduce costs and increase and diversify revenue streams whenever and wherever possible.


Fundraising Advisory Committee- The Fundraising Advisory Committee is a small committee of volunteers who meet for the purpose of advising the Board of Directors and Office Staff on fundraising matters and providing feedback for new initiatives.


Marking Committee- The Marketing Committee's role is to plan and implement an annual marketing strategy that ensures GHF's goal of promoting the organization's activities and accomplishments are achieved.


Program Development Committee- The Program Development Committee is responsible for ensuring the delivery of quality programs and services through development and monitoring on a regular basis.


Volunteer Advisory Committee- The Volunteer Advisory Committee provides advice to staff regarding the volunteer program including all aspects of volunteer management (recruiting, managing, training and recognition).
